BRIAN CAMPBELL: Painter & Illustrator
Born in 1941, trained at Carlisle and Liverpool Colleges of Art, Brian
moved to Wigton as an Art Teacher in 1962. He has lived and worked
there ever since.
As his principal subject matter Brian uses his own locality: the Solway Plain, the Northern Fells, and the Solway Coast, as well as the town of Wigton itself, with occasional forays into Scotland (Kintyre and Isle of Lewis) for additional material. Oils or gouache (opaque watercolour) are
his preferred media.
Over the past 6 decades Brian has organised 14 solo exhibitions of his
work as well as contributing to numerous Cumbrian group shows. He has produced 2 books of his own illustrated poems, created the designs for The Bragg Family Windows (a triptych of stained-glass windows in St
Mary’s Church, Wigton), and provided 18 drawings and a cover painting
for Melvyn Bragg’s novel “A Christmas Child”.
In 2010, Brian curated the 1st Annual Wigton Open Art Exhibition as a
showplace for local artists. Its success led a year later to his founding of the Fountain Gallery in the town as an outlet for the work of many Cumbrian painters, sculptors and craftspersons. The Gallery moved to
bigger premises in 2021, while the Open celebrated its (Covid-postponed)
10th Anniversary in 2022.
